The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the schedule for the preliminary test for civil services in 2020. The exam will be held on May 31, 2020, according to the timetable posted on the official website www.upsc.gov.in. By February 12, the application for the same will be available.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. Those interested in applying should have a bachelor’s degree from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission in any field (UGC)
  2. Those who have taken the qualifying exam and are awaiting results are also eligible to apply, as long as they submit their certificate of qualification and mark sheet to the UPSC before the main exam.

Pattern of the examination:

The Commission will draw a list of candidates who will be qualified for the Civil Service (Main) Examination based on the criterion of a minimum qualifying mark of 33 percent in Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination General Studies Paper-II and total qualifying marks in Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination General Studies Paper-I as determined by the Commission.

Note :

For all questions, there will be negative marking for erroneous answers (as outlined below), with the exception of a few questions where negative marking will be built in the form of different marks being awarded to the most appropriate and least acceptable answers.

The Main Examination will include a written exam as well as an interview. The written test will consist of nine traditional essay-style papers, two of which will be qualifying in character.

The marks earned in all compulsory papers (Paper I to Paper VII), as well as the marks earned in the Personality Test Interview, will be used to determine to rank.

Number of attempts

Candidates in the General category and OBC (creamy layer) must have reached the age of 21 on the 1st August of the Exam year, but must not have reached the age of 32 on the 1st August of the Exam year.

Candidates in the OBC (non creamy layer) category must be at least 21 years old on the 1st August of the exam year but not more than 35 years old. Candidates in the SC category must have reached the age of 21 on August 1st of the exam year, but must not have reached the age of 37 on August 1st of the exam year. Candidates in the ST category must have reached the age of 21 by August 1st of the exam year, but must not have reached the age of 37 by August 1st of the exam year.

There are a total of six attempts in the general category and the OBC (creamy layer) category.
There are a total of nine attempts for OBCs (non creamy layer).
There is no limit on the number of attempts for candidates in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories till they reach the age of 37.

Students from the OBC, SC, and ST categories can take the first six attempts as General category candidates (if they like) and then use the category privileges to reduce the number of attempts.
